Community Based Doula Program
Are you pregnant and unsure how to navigate everything that comes along with this exciting but busy and uncertain time in your life? Unsure how to schedule or figure out what all the doctor’s appointments are actually for? Do you have questions about the planning process for delivery? Or do you just generally feel like you could use some encouragement and guidance? A doula from Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies may be the perfect support person for you!
Doula services include non-medical support for birth, postpartum, early termination of pregnancy, and bereavement from pregnancy or child loss.
What is our program about?
The Community Doula Program (CBDP) at Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB) is designed to support the community, with a strong focus on serving BIPOC families. We understand that doula care is an important tradition in many cultures, but access has become more limited over time. Our goal is to prioritize making these services accessible to BIPOC clients, who are often the most impacted by barriers to care. While we offer scholarships to some clients, we cannot provide them to everyone, as we must focus on reaching those who need the support most.
Why choose our program?
The Community-Based Doula Program is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of our communities and clients. At HMHB, we provide both social and clinical wraparound services to ensure you receive the support you need. We are committed to doing our best to make sure you’re cared for.
Behind the scenes, your doula has access to a wide network of resources and expertise. They can collaborate with other doulas and tap into the services offered at HMHB. If needed, your doula can also reconnect you with the Program Manager for additional support.
Emotional Well-Being Checks:
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a short questionnaire we use to check in on new parents’ emotional well-being because we truly care about their mental health. It helps us understand how they’re feeling and allows us to offer extra support if needed during this important time.
Educational Recommendations:
Each client in the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Community-Based Doula Program is highly recommended to complete the following educational components:
Childbirth Education Basics: Watch a 1 hour Childbirth Education Basics class offered by the program, or complete a comparable childbirth education class elsewhere.
Postpartum and Infant Preparation Class: Watch a 1 hour Postpartum and Infant Preparation class offered by the program or a comparable class from another provider.
Breastfeeding Basics: Attend a Breastfeeding Basics class with Amber Ward, Clinical Support Manager, or a similar breastfeeding preparation class from another provider.
We host monthly meetings for different reasons for the clients in our program:
HMHB CBDP Monthly Client Hangout: A time to meet virtually with others, check in and have discussion every third Monday.
HMHB CBDP In-Person Client Hangout: Just like the monthly hangouts but every fourth month, location tbd (starting April 2025)
Childbirth, Postpartum and Infant Prep Check-in: During this monthly 1-2 hour session, we will talk about topics related to the Childbirth Education and Postpartum and Infant Preparation Class.
