Doula

My name is Samantha Smith, 33 years old . I am half Puerto Rican and half Mexican. Originally from Southern California but I have been in Hawai’i for 12 years now. I moved to big island in 2012 to be with my now husband and finished my bachelors degree in psychology from UH Hilo in 2014 which is also when we decided to move to Oahu. My husband and I have been together 12.5 years and married for 5 years. He was raised on big island and is Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, Japanese and Chinese. I have a 12 year old stepson, an almost 4 year old son (his bday is end of November) and a 7 month old daughter. My family is my biggest motivation to be my best everyday. I don’t get much free time these days but we love going to the beach or park as a family to get fresh air and some sun. I am a believer in Christ and treat others as I would want to be treated. I love learning about new things and other cultures.

I first started having interest in becoming a doula when I had my son in 2020 during the midst of COVID and was blessed to have experienced the community based doula program firsthand through HMHB along with all of their other services. Then we had the same amazing doula (shoutout Kari Foster) during my pregnancy and birth with my daughter in February of this year. Both births were very different experiences but such life altering experiences. We don’t have much support on Oahu where we currently live so having the support from our doula and HMHB has been such a blessing and I can’t wait to learn and give back to my community here on Oahu, and possibly big island (as we might move back there in the next couple years).
