Perinatal Depression and Anxiety: During pregnancy or after having a baby, it is common for women to feel sad, anxious and or tired. If these feelings do not go away after 2 to 3 weeks, it could be a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder such as postpartum depression.


WHEN DOES A PERINATAL MOOD OR ANXIETY DISORDER START?

It can happen during pregnancy or soon after childbirth and it develops gradually over a period of several months. However, perinatal mood or anxiety disorders can also set in suddenly and some women don’t see the first signs until months after they have given birth.


ARE PERINATAL MOOD AND ANXIETY DISORDERS COMMON?

Yes! 1 in 5 pregnant & new moms will experience some form of anxiety or mood disorder.


Signs of perinatal mood or anxiety disorder

  • You feel emotionally disconnected to

    your baby

  • You have negative feelings toward

    your baby

  • You worry about hurting your baby

  • You don’t feel like taking care of

    yourself

  • You feel sad, guilty, hopeless or

    inadequate as a mother

  • You feel tired or weak often

  • You feel helpless, guilty or angry all

    the time

  • You lack interest in family and friends

  • You obsess over the baby’s safety
