Informational Resources Book of Choices

How to Use this Guide

You may be at this website today because you are looking for help with an unplanned pregnancy and feel nervous about your situation.  Experiencing an unplanned pregnancy can be a very emotional experience. However, you are not alone; 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned. You should also know that there are many choices available for you. This guide will lead you to real resources and professionals who will respect your right to make the decision that is best for you.

It is important for you to act early because there are more choices early on. You may even be able to prevent yourself from becoming pregnant right now. Emergency contraception is a form of birth control that, when taken within 120 hours after unprotected sex, can prevent pregnancy. It is only effective if taken within five days of unprotected sex, and the sooner within those five days you take emergency contraception, the more likely you are to prevent a pregnancy.  Visit to learn how to get emergency contraception in your area.

You may have come to this resource because you know you are already pregnant and do not want to continue your pregnancy. As with all decisions related to an unplanned pregnancy, it is important for you to act early if you decide to have an abortion procedure.  Visit for more information.

You may choose to continue your pregnancy. Visit the Resource Directory for resources on selecting a doctor or other provider to care for you during your pregnancy and birth. If you choose to continue your pregnancy but are not able to parent, go to the Hawaii Adoption Agency  for information about adoption, a bill of rights for birth parents, and a list of Hawai‘i  adoption agencies that handle private adoptions. We have included agencies that vow to respect your right to choose what is best for you, even if after investigating this option you choose another. Your other choice is parenthood. Visit  for resources providing support networks that can help if you choose to become a parent.
